XL Carwash Leeuwarden upgrades wash tunnel with Cleanpanel

After fourteen years of intensive use, the wash tunnel at XL Carwash in Leeuwarden was due for an update. Owner Richard van der Wal chose to completely renew the walls and ceiling using Cleanpanel panels from Cleanbuild. The result: a fresher look, easier cleaning, and positive feedback from customers.

XL Carwash has now been operating for fourteen years and has been owned by Richard van der Wal since the beginning. Although he did not originally come from the car wash sector, he saw opportunities at the time when a building on the ring road of Leeuwarden became available. The site was renovated and grew into a full-service wash location, featuring a 40-metre-long wash tunnel, an indoor and outdoor vacuum area with 24 spaces, four wash bays, cloth vending machines, automatic mat cleaners and tyre pumps.

Including installation

The wash hall had walls up to eight metres high. Due to the moisture from the wash tunnel, this led over the years to contamination from green algae. “It had been bothering me for years,” says Van der Wal. “Cleaning it was extremely difficult. We needed a lift every time. But lowering the ceiling and replacing the walls is quite an investment. In the end, I decided to go for it.”

In September last year, Van der Wal got in touch with Cleanbuild at The Car Wash Show Europe. “That’s where I spoke with them about my wishes. They could supply the panels and also take care of the installation. That was something I considered very important.” According to the entrepreneur, the installation process was highly efficient. Two days had been planned for the ceiling suspension system, but it was completed within one day. In total, the wash tunnel was closed for ten days due to the renovation work.

Lowering the ceiling

The renovation at XL Carwash started at the beginning of December. The ceiling was lowered by 4.5 metres and finished with graphite grey Cleanpanel panels from Cleanbuild. The remaining walls were covered with white Cleanpanel panels. Van der Wal: “It’s now much easier to clean. We can simply do it with a ladder. That’s really great. It also looks sleek and hygienic.”

Cleanbuild also completely closed off a window section on the side facing the vacuum area. “They recommended this because the window often suffered from leaks due to all the moisture, and I have to say: it actually looks quite nice now,” says Van der Wal. “The wash tunnel has truly become a tunnel with…”
